Duane Eddy (US)

1938 – 2024 In memoriam

American guitarist, born in Corning, New York in 1938, and the man who turned the electric guitar's bottom strings into a lead voice. Working in Phoenix with producer Lee Hazlewood, he built the 'twangy' sound - the melody picked low, soaked in tremolo and echo, with a saxophone honking over the top - on 'Rebel-Rouser', 'Ramrod', 'Peter Gunn' and 'Because They're Young', and became one of the biggest-selling instrumental acts of the era without singing a word on most of it. His band was the Rebels. In January 1960 he headlined Lee Gordon's Big Show through Australia, the package Eddie Cochran had been booked for and gave up to tour Britain instead, and that March and April he crossed Britain himself on a bill headed by Bobby Darin. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and died in Franklin, Tennessee in 2024.
