The final concert of the 1959 Winter Dance Party, at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa on Monday 2 February 1959 — the last performances of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. 'The Big Bopper' Richardson, who died in a plane crash in the early hours of 3 February, forever remembered as 'the day the music died'. Also on the bill were Dion and the Belmonts and Frankie Sardo. The show began at 7:00 pm before a packed house of over a thousand.
