Johnny Burnette Rock 'n' Roll Trio (US)

1951 – 1957 Disbanded

The original Memphis trio: Johnny Burnette on vocals and rhythm guitar, his brother Dorsey on double bass and Paul Burlison on lead guitar, with drummer Tony Austin added on live dates. They played Memphis clubs from the early 1950s and held a two-year residency at the Hideaway Club in Middleton, Tennessee before driving to New York in 1956, winning three rounds of Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and reaching the final at Madison Square Garden on 9 September 1956. Their Coral recordings of 1956-57 - 'Tear It Up', 'The Train Kept A-Rollin'', 'Honey Hush' - failed commercially and became foundational rockabilly. Dorsey left in the autumn of 1956 and was replaced by Johnny Black; the group disbanded in the autumn of 1957. The trio was recreated from the early 1980s onwards and that later act is held separately in this catalogue.
