The final of Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour at Madison Square Garden on Sunday 9 September 1956, and the biggest stage the Rock and Roll Trio ever played. Johnny Burnette, his brother Dorsey and Paul Burlison had won three consecutive rounds of the televised talent contest that April and May, which is what earned them their Coral recording contract, and they reached the final performing 'Tear It Up' and 'Hound Dog'. Their moment was swallowed whole: the broadcast went out against Elvis Presley's first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, which took an 82.6 per cent share of the American audience. A month later Coral issued 'The Train Kept A-Rollin'' backed with 'Honey Hush'. The venue was the third Madison Square Garden, on Eighth Avenue at 50th Street, demolished in 1968.
