Lee Gordon's Big Show — Sydney 1957 (first Stadium run)
On stage
More info
The first Sydney Stadium run of Lee Gordon's 'Big Show', on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 October 1957 — two performances on the Friday and three on the Saturday, in the round at the old boxing stadium at Rushcutters Bay. Little Richard headlined over Gene Vincent and his Blue Caps, Eddie Cochran, Alis Lesley and Johnny O'Keefe and the Dee Jays. The tour's souvenir programme, a red-covered twelve-page booklet printed by Publicity Press of Sydney and billed as the '1st Australian Tour 1957', was sold at these performances; a surviving copy bought at the Stadium on 4, 5 or 12 October is held by the Powerhouse Museum. Sputnik 1 was launched on the Friday, and Little Richard's reaction to it fed the religious crisis that ended his part in the tour a week later.
